For flatbed trucks drivers:truck winches, winch straps and winch bars

To haul bulk loads like big logs flatbeds are probably the best choice ,grade 70 chains and chain binders are probably not necessary for these loads, of course you can use ratchet tie downs,2”ratchets are probably not good enough so 4”tie downs will be necessary, but don’t forget 4”ratchet buckle is heavy and bulky, usually flatbeds come with winches installed,if that’s the case you only need a little more than 10 winch straps for one flatbed, plus one winch bar to tighten the straps. There are 2”,3”and 4”winch straps available, most seen truck winches are slide in winches and weld on winches.

The way the truck winch and strap system works is pretty simple, the mandrel, the part into which you can insert the tie down strap, can be used to tighten the winch straps easily, thus tie the loads down pretty much by just put winch bar into the winch side hole then turn as many rounds as needed until the loads are secured properly. The barrel across the winch body has holes at one end,a  gear at the other end,the part between the winch body is mandrel, just put the straps into it,since the gear has a brake, when you turn the barrel to tighten the winch strap the brake on the gear will prevent the barrel from loosening the strap, When unloading your flatbed, you can open the brake on the gear, loose the strap a bit,get the hook off and retract the winch strap by turning the winch barrel the other way, when you are at it you will find it’s so easy, even…can dot it. To turn your winch barrel you will definitely need a winch bar,no one can do it with bare hands, besides,it’s required by law to use a winch bar with truck winches.

For your information, usually you can choose from 4 different kind of winch bar,the standard winch bars painted black, the chromated standard winch bars, chromated combination winch bars and combination winch bars painted half yellow. To get which kind of winch bar depends on one’s priority and preference, all winch bars will serve the same purpose, they are just steel sticks with some tweaks after all.
